Hey readers!

Can you imagine paying for something with a seven-dollar bill? Well, at one time in our past, you could! You could also have used beaver pelts, playing cards and money from Henry’s Bank. You might have bought things at the general store or through a mail-order catalogue. Or maybe you would have been amazed by the selection of wonderful new things at Eaton’s, the Bay, Dupuis Frères, Woodward’s or some of Canada’s other department stores.

This issue of Kayak is all about money — paper and coins together, known as currency — and shopping, and how they’ve changed. And boy, have they changed! If it’s hard for you to imagine using eggs to buy skates, just think how astonished your great-grandparents would have been if they had seen someone pointing and clicking with a mouse to buy airline tickets!

As always, we love to hear from you, so tell us what you like and what you’d change about Kayak. And don’t forget to enter the Ultimate Class Field Trip — you could win a free visit to three national historic sites in Ottawa!
